Tiger sharks in the Bahamas! Now that's diving with sharks!
Picture yourself standing on the deck of a boat, the sun shining bright and the water a clear crystal blue. You’re about to embark on a dive with Tiger sharks in the Bahamas, and the anticipation and excitement are palpable. As you wait for one of the numerous Lemon sharks circling on the surface to swim by, you can’t help but feel a rush of adrenaline. Finally, you jump into the water, passing a curious Reef shark and a huge school of Jacks.
As you look down, you notice three to four Tiger sharks below swimming gracefully over the pure white sand, and the sight takes your breath away. These big, sleek, and smart creatures are the reason you’ve come here. You feel comfortable enough to get close, making eye contact and passing almost close enough to touch.
On this dive, you’ll see 9-13 feet (3-4+ meters) long Tiger sharks, and generally, about 4 to 7 individuals show up on every dive, but we’ve even seen over to 10! These magnificent creatures slowly swim around the scuba divers, calmly looking for someone they recognize with the bait. They’re smart and know the routine even better than the divers.
They’ve been given names like Emma, Maui, Freckles, Jitterbug, to name a few. All the Tiger Sharks you see at Tiger Beach are female. There are many regulars, and there are some you see only once. Each shark has a unique personality, and regardless of that, you try to keep their behavior calm and relaxed. You follow a consistent and mindful routine of baiting and feeding to keep these sharks cool.
As you surface from your dive with these magnificent creatures, you feel a sense of excitement, joy, and amazement. You know that this was the best dive ever, and it will stay with you forever.
Scuba Diving with Sharks
If you’re an experienced advanced diver and are looking for an exhilarating adventure, then cage-less scuba diving with sharks might be for you. During these dives, you’ll have the opportunity to swim around tiger sharks at Tiger Beach area, with four dives a day, alternating structured tiger shark feeding and non-feeding dives. Our shark handlers will bait and feed the tiger sharks and hammerhead sharks using crates of bait fish specifically for this purpose.
It’s important to keep in mind that while these sharks are cautious, slow-moving, docile, tactical, and smart, they are still large opportunistic feeding fish, and their natural curiosity can lead them to approach divers. Therefore, it’s crucial to maintain eye contact and be attentive, particularly with tiger sharks. If they get too close, gently pushing them away may be necessary.
It’s vital to understand the potential risks associated with shark diving and feeding. Participants must be adults, experienced advanced divers, and accept responsibility for their safety during these dives. Baiting with dead fish attracts the sharks, which increases the risk of injury or death. We limit night dives due to the sharks’ natural nocturnal nature.
Despite the potential risks, many of our guests return from these dives with smiles, excitement, and thrilling stories to tell. It’s an unforgettable experience to witness these fascinating creatures up close and personal.
